Choosing the Right Hearing Aid

It cannot be denied if the function of the sense of hearing is very influential in social activities. Hearing aids is one solution if you experience hearing loss. This tool consists of three main components, namely the microphone, amplifier and speaker. How Hearing Aids Work

In general, the workings of hearing aids are divided into two, namely analog and digital. The difference lies in the signal produced, the following explanation:

  • Analog hearing aids

    • Analog hearing aids work by converting sound into amplified electrical signals. This tool will be made based on the order recommended by your audiologist or doctor.

  • Digital hearing aids

    • These hearing aids convert sounds into numerical codes, such as those found on computers so they can be specially programmed, to amplify certain frequencies. This tool is also easier to set up and adapt to the environment and user needs. However, generally the price of this product is more expensive than the analog type.

Type of hearing aid

Hearing aids will accompany your daily activities, so your audiologist or doctor will recommend the type according to age, as well as the level of hearing loss experienced. Below are some of the types of hearing aids that are generally sold in the market:

  • Tools in the ear (in the ear / ITE)

    • ITE is suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. Usually there are two ITE models, which are devices that are installed in the entire outer ear lobe or only in part. This type is not recommended for children because they are in their infancy, so the size of their ear lobes is constantly changing. Following is a brief overview of ITE:
  • Easy
  • Uses a larger battery so that it lasts longer.
  • ITE is more visible compared to other types of hearing aids that are smaller.
  • Has a volume control feature.
  • Speakers are prone to clogging by earwax.

  • Behind the ear (behind the ear / BTE)

    • BTE is used by attaching the upper ear lobe and the back of the ear. There is a small tube that connects the sound receiver in the ear canal or called earmod. BTE is suitable for various levels of hearing loss at all ages. Following is a brief description of BTE:
  • The sound can be more hardened, compared to other hearing aids.
  • Catch more wind noise, so it may be more noisy than other types.
  • Modification form is now smaller than the previous generation which is the largest type of hearing aid.

  • Speaker / Receiver in ear or ear canal (receiver in canal / RIC and receiver in the ear / RITE)

    • This type is almost the same shape as BTE. The difference, BTE uses a small tube while this type of device uses a small cable. Here's a brief description of this type of tool:
  • Compared to BTE, it is less visible.
  • The speaker is prone to blockage of earwax.

  • Tools inside the ear canal (in the canal / ITC)

    • This type is suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss in adults. ITC can be made by order. The shape will meet some of the ear canal. Here's an overview of ITC:
  • The following is a brief description of this type of tool.
  • Not too visible to the ear.
  • The speaker is prone to blockage of earwax.

  • Tool completely inside the ear canal (completely in the canal / CIC)

    • CIC is formed so that it can be inserted into the ear canal. Its use is for mild to moderate hearing loss in adults. Here's a brief overview of CIC:
  • Not really catching the sound of the wind.
  • Susceptible to blockage of earwax.
  • Does not contain additional features such as the ITC.
  • Is the type that has the smallest of them other types and does not look conspicuous.
  • Because it uses a smaller battery, its durability is shorter and harder to handle.
Typically, novice users will need several weeks to adapt to this tool. Once accustomed, users can adjust their own tools to the right volume and comfortable.

  • Cochlear Implant

Unlike hearing aids that can amplify sound, cochlear implants are a medical procedure performed by replacing damaged inner ear function, with the performance of a small electronic device that works to stimulate the auditory nerve. This action is more beneficial for patients with nerve deafness. The implant is implanted into the inner ear area, produces sound signals, then is transmitted to the brain through the auditory nerve. With this tool, users can understand the sounds that appear in the environment, warning signals, including understanding conversations with other people on the phone. This is because the sound can be heard differently in different rooms, for example an open or closed room, large or small, noisy or not. Do this until your ears begin to get used to hearing aids.
